JOB DESCRIPTION

 

JOB TITLE:                                                            High School Head Coach

 

REQUIREMENTS:

A.    Education Level:                                       Bachelor’s Degree (BA/BS) 

 

B.    Experience Desired:                                High School head coaching experience desired.

 

C.    Physical Requirements:                         Hand-eye, mind-eye coordination, physical dexterity, the ability to bend, stoop, walk, talk, and sit.  The ability to travel between locations.

 

D.    Other Requirements:                             College course work in the Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries.  Knowledge of the sport.  High school/college participation preferred.  Teaching assignment in building preferred.

 

REPORTS TO:                                                      Principal, Activities Coordinator

 

RECEIVES GUIDANCE FROM:                       Principal, Activities Coordinator

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

 

1.            Assumes responsibility for the entire program including:

                a.      Coaches the varsity squad

                b.      Supervises assistant coaches 7-12

                c.       Determines athletic participation during practices and games, including squad level and playing time, in conjunction with assistant coach at respective level

                d.      Positively promotes the athletic program within the school and community

                e.      Gives guidance to middle school coaches and programs

                f.       Implements district athletic department policies

2.            Assists in the selection and evaluation of assistant coaches

3.            Works with the Activities Director in:

                a.      Formulation of game schedules

                b.      Selection of contest officials

                c.       Arrangement for out-of-town trips

                d.      Arrangements for physical examinations

                e.      Preparation of athletic permission slips and eligibility lists

                f.       Equipment and supply requisitions

                g.      Scouting arrangements

                h.      Planning of new facilities and/or modification of existing facilities

4.            Works with the Activities Director to correlate the practice schedules of the ninth, sophomore, junior varsity, and varsity squads

5.            Supervises dressing rooms and playing area during and following periods of team participation.

6.            Remains with students and supervises when traveling to away games

7.            Cares for and maintains equipment and annual inventories

8.            Prepares award lists and collects athletic fees

9.            Attends all conference meetings or any other meetings where the program is involved.  Operates within the policies of the Conference and the SDHSAA.

10.          Works closely with custodians in control at facilities

11.          Keeps informed on current trends in designated sport and participates in respective clinics

12.          Maintains active membership in related professional organization

13.          Prepares list when teams are taken out of school to participate in athletic contest

14.          Maintains a staff relationship with other coaches

15.          Performs other duties as assigned by Principal or Activities Director

16.          Dresses appropriately for coaching duties at practice and game time

17.          Adheres to policies and procedures established by the Tea Area School District

18.          Administers first aid to an injured player and takes appropriate action such as notifying the family doctor, the parent, activities director, and the building principal

19.          Communicates between officials and coaches in a professional manner

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

A.    Inside and Outside (Gymnasium, Wrestling Room, Locker Rooms, Coaching Offices, Weight Room, Football Field, Track, Soccer Fields, Golf Courses, District Transportation)

 

B.    Climatic Environment – Possibly subjected to extreme cold of below 32 degrees and heat above 100 degrees.  Occasionally subjected to extreme noise, odors, mists, dust, and ventilation issues. 

 

C.    Hazards – Possible exposure to bodily fluids, communicable diseases, and adverse walking and driving conditions.
